EXAMINING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF 4PNE WRITING TECHNIQUE IN ENHANCING PUPILS' NOTE EXPANSION WRITING SKILL
Writing note expansion became a serious issue among Year 5 pupils in two primary schools in Keningau district. These pupils did not even attempt to write this section C in the English Writing Paper due to lack of note expansion writing skill. Their English teachers could not figure out any idea to develop their note expansion writing skill. Hence, the main purpose of this action research is to examine the effectiveness of 4 Phase Note Expansion (4PNE) Writing Technique in enhancing pupils’ note expansion writing skill among Year 5 pupils. Besides, the secondary purpose of this action research is to examine whether 4 Phase Note Expansion (4PNE) Writing Technique can improve the pupils’ grammatical knowledge (present and past tense knowledge). The sample consisted of 10 Year Five pupils with the aid of their ESL teachers. The 10 pupils were assigned to the control group. The research instruments consisted of 4PNE Writing sheets, a pre-test, and a post-test. The collected data was analysed using Microsoft Excel and the output is presented in score and percentage. The research's findings revealed that the pupils showed an encouraging improvement in writing note expansion and grammatical knowledge (present and past tense knowledge) through the implementation of this 4PNE Writing Technique. In addition, the researcher found that the pupils were motivated to learn note expansion writing skill and most of them had positive perceptions towards the use of this technique.

MACHINE LEARNING & LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
Various ways have been introduced to help students speak in the most fun way possible. Games, songs, videos are the main choices to engage learners to enjoy their English language learning experience. Often, such approaches exposed students to language use in one direction, which is to only hear, see or merely repeat. Teachers have to do double the work to provide feedback and the environment seems to be within classroom walls. Manual feedback or responses cost time and it solely depends on the teachers' effort. This can be replaced with machine learning. Machine learning is a technology that automatically performs certain tasks based on statistical data. Therefore, whenever students are speaking, they will get responses and the conversation flows from there. It gives automatic responses, saves time, and provides better validity and reliability in assessment. Language learning is gamified and it boosts language acquisition even more.

FLIPPED CLASSROOM WITH VIDEO COLLECTION
Flipped classroom approach was introduced to help reduce teaching time in the classroom. Instead of delivering content, classroom instruction should revolve around presentations and discussions. Some materials need to be given out before students enter the classroom. The problem is that they often present in the form of notes, slides and videos. Some materials need computers in order for them to be opened. Not everyone owns a computer at home and it seems tedious. Leave alone to ask students to find materials for their forthcoming classes. With almost everyone having a mobile phone in their hands, at least among the secondary schools students, they can watch videos on their phones at their own convenience. They can find videos to contribute too. With Youtube as the most popular video sharing platform in the world, it is possible to do flipped classroom in two directions, watching the videos their teacher has prepared and for students to add up some more videos to the list. Flipped classroom with video sharing along with collaboration is made easy.

XPLOITING CHILDREN’S STORIES
Stories are naturally entertaining for all ages. They serve as wonderful teaching and learning tools, especially for young learners.
This workshop attempts to exploit stories to involve and motivate reluctant learners of English by using an experiential, activity-based or student-centred approach. For more capable or fluent students, the activities will serve as a springboard for reflective writing. Co-operative learning, critical and creative thinking and predicting skills are incorporated. It also integrates the teaching and learning of the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as grammar.

I take this opportunity to thank Ms Loke Khoon Ee who was a lecturer in the Teacher Education Institute of Malaysia, Penang Campus for sharing these resources with me. She has been very generous and kind in giving me the permission to share these materials.

ESL LEARNERS’ STRATEGIES IN COPING WITH LANGUAGE LEARNING ANXIETY IN 21ST CENTURY ESL CLASSROOM
Language learning anxiety has been identified as a factor that hampers ESL learning. This study was carried out to investigate what are the ESL learners’ strategies in coping with language learning anxiety in the 21st century ESL classrooms. A phenomenology research design was employed, in which data was obtained via focus group interviews and reflective journals. A total of 10 participants who had been identified as highly anxious students in 21st century ESL classrooms in a high-performance school, were purposively selected for this study. The findings revealed that ESL students in 21st century classroom employed several strategies to cope with language learning anxiety that are (1) consulting friends, (2) making teachers as references, (3) self-preparation, (4) imitating successful ESL learners, and (5) self-motivating. Several pedagogical suggestions are presented in order to make ESL educators become more aware of language anxious students.

READING ONLINE: A TASK-BASED APPROACH
This study presents the task-based approach that incorporates the Internet and reading in the teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL) by five secondary school teachers in Malaysia. Through a three-series interview session, the findings from the recounts and reflections of these teachers were reviewed to provide the plausibility of alleviating Internet and other forms of digital applications in accordance to the national education policies to be carried out by teachers in Malaysia. Given the concept of new literacies, incorporating the Internet into language teaching is not foreign to teachers, especially those of the digital natives who were born after the computer boom in the 1980s. Nonetheless, the relevance of the materials used from the Internet as well as the coherence of tasks and activities in teaching reading that provides opportunities for students to communicate, collaborate, think critically and create language learnt are issues that teachers need to consider within this dimension of teaching using the Internet. The task-based approach is one of the many approaches that well address with the issues mentioned as there are steps and procedures that students need to follow to achieve the outcome of the reading tasks. Within this study, the role of the teacher as a facilitator, authentic communication among the students in their groups and multimodality in reading using the Internet are discussed. Issues related to the planning and delivering of tasks, sensitivity to challenges caused by students in using the Internet and the continuous learning about teaching through reflections by the teachers are addressed.

TEACHERS’ SENSE OF EFFICACY, TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS AND PRACTICE OF HEADCOUNT IN STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACHIEVEMENT
This research was conducted to find out the relationship between English language Headcount programme practice, teachers’ sense of efficacy, teaching effectiveness and students’ academic achievement in the Federal Territory of Labuan. This study involved 150 English language teachers and 3493 students’ summative assessment records. The instrument used was a set of survey questionnaire which was distributed to schools statewide. Research data was analysed using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for t-test, ANOVA, correlation and regression. The findings found that the Headcount programme practice, sense of efficacy and teaching effectiveness were rated high. Nevertheless, a very weak relationship was found for these three variables with students’ academic achievement. It is proposed that teachers and students need to work together in the interest to achieve the desired target.

SEVEN YEARS IN LABUAN: LEARNING ABOUT ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
As anyone who has studied, researched or practiced teaching English as a foreign language knows, it is not necessary for the teacher to speak the native language of her students, and translation into the students’ own language is unnecessary and seriously frowned upon. However, what if the teacher explored the language of her students? What if she had an understanding of the grammar of the language without having to actually learn it? Would this assist in her teaching methods and practice? If the teacher was aware of the differences between the students’ native language and her own would that empower her to employ specific methods to highlight those differences and make learning English easier for the students? This presentation will explore some of the grammatical differences between English and Bahasa Malaysia and in turn why students of English have difficulty in learning the language fluently. The presentation will examine the different forms of English spoken in Malaysia and will also touch on some current issues concerning English language teaching here.

2+2 = 6, 2+1= ?
Using games in the classroom has always been an effective teaching strategy that teachers use to increase students’ engagement in learning. Studies have shown that what makes games effective is the act of problem solving to complete a task (MacKenty, 2006). Escape game was created by Takao Kato in 2007 where players need to escape a themed room by solving riddles and puzzles. Using the same principles as the famous Escape Game, now language activities can be done similarly the same way. Students need to solve series of puzzles and riddles using clues, hints and strategies to complete objectives at hand. This game helps stude to improve their language skills, problem solving skills and teamwork. This game can be used for many different purposes and the type of riddles and puzzles that can be created is based on the teachers’ creativity and imagination.

PENULISAN KARANGAH BERPANDUKAN ‘KAD JI’

S-R-G (‘STOP, READY, GO’ PROGRESS INDICATOR)
Classroom participation and responses are important aspects in classroom as they increase the reasoning ability, critical thinking and creativity skills among the students. Ideally, S-R-G is an innovation that focuses on classroom management in which it gives an opportunity for the teachers to pay attention on students’ responses especially in a big classroom. It is adapted from the classic ‘Traffic Light’ system in 21st century classrooms that emphasizes on the students’ individual responses. Deriving from the need of assessing students in big classroom, this respective innovation is meant to be utilised to help teachers to assess students’ progress in grouping activities.
