PORTRAITS AND PARAMETERS OF AN ONLINE
INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICE
The purpose of this study is to
explore teacher's observations in using texts from the Internet as resources in
teaching reading in an ESL classroom. Five secondary school teachers were
involved in this study which is conducted using qualitative method to elicit
the experiences and observations by the teachers in using this method of
classroom practice. Data emerged was analyzed verbatim using the pragmatic lens
that focused on two research questions pertaining the roles of a teacher and
the contexts of the professional environment. The results found is important to
describe the relevance of online instructional practices and teacher's
pedagogical beliefs in adapting to classroom teaching methods that abides to
the need for 21st century learning.

TITLE OF PRESENTATION:
READING COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES
Literature
is part and parcel of the Malaysian secondary schools English language learning
curriculum. In literature study, novel is one of the compulsory readings.
However, when was the last time your students finished reading novels on their
own? General observations have suggested that it is becoming more apparent to
educators that nowadays students either do not usually complete their novel
reading on their own or they are experiencing poor reading comprehension skills
which discourage them to read. Therefore, it is significant to grow learners
who are able to read and comprehend the novels independently. In developing the
learners towards becoming successful autonomous readers, teachers should avoid
spoon-feeding the learners by teaching them to read and understand novels in a
manner that is consistent with how they will read and comprehend as adults. To
achieve that, effective comprehension strategies should be adopted. Adler
(2001) explains that comprehension strategies are conscious plans or steps that
are taken in making sense of a text. A well planned comprehension strategy
instruction can assist learners to become active readers who can manage their
own reading comprehension. In the workshop, participants will gain rich
exposure to several comprehension strategies which can help students to enhance
their reading skills through classroom activities, particularly in dealing with
average and above proficiency learners. These strategies provide specific
instructions for developing and retaining comprehension skill. Implementing the
following strategies have found to improve reading comprehension lesson
successfully.

"READ-TO-WRITE" HELPS NEW WRITERS IN WRITING QUALITY ESSAY: PUPILS OF SK BEBULOH EXPERIENCE
As new writers, pupils have difficulties in writing a good essay
that can sustain the interest of the reader. Working on the five steps writing
process isn’t easy for them. This is because they lack skills in generating,
planning and expanding the ideas. ‘Read-to-Write’ approach helps pupils to
solve the problems mentioned. In this approach, pupils need to read and
understand the sample essay given. Then, they need to complete the ‘POS’ table
which helps to activate schema and finally they have to write an essay of
slightly similar topic. This paper presents a qualitative approach using
observation and documentation of 25 pupils of Year 6 Diamond of SK Bebuloh, Wilayah
Persekutuan Labuan. The pre test and post test result showed that ‘Read-to-Write’
approach is able to improve new writers in writing a quality essay. They are
able to convey their ideas clearly in an organized order and showed confidence in
using the language.

Modul HITS

THE LIVING PHOTOGRAPH BIG BOOK
There are 4 poems for students to
learn in SPM. This big book on the poem ‘The Living Photograph’ for Form 4 is
to enhance the teaching of the poem especially to the weaker and average
students. This is to encourage them to read and understand the poem by looking
at the pictures which will attract their attention in class. This big book
consists of a few pages whereby the explanation of the poem is done line by
line. It includes the setting, persona, tone & mood, moral value and lastly
the themes. Pictures were drawn by the students themselves. Based on this poem,
25 questions will be given to the class to see if they remember what they have
learnt from the poem. It was found that their attention span increased. The
wordings were easier to understand. Vocabularies were simplified so that they
could understand and memorize well. Though there are a few limitations such as
time constraints in doing the big book and students’ involvement, the outcome
of it and the students’ interaction in communicating in the language is very
promising. The full findings on the outcome will be presented in CAIELTS 2017.

IMPROVING ESL LEARNERS' COHERENCE AND COHESION IN WRITING THROUGH ANALOGY
As
ESL educators are solely focusing on the technical and grammatical parts in
writing, ESL learners' coherence and cohesion are always hampered in a basket
of ignorance among educators. Having good coherence and cohesion in writing is
important to produce essays that are smoothly structured. One of the methods to
improve ESL learners' coherence and cohesion in writing is by guiding them with
a method of teaching writing through analogy. The respective method would help
and guide students to develop their ideas and construct sentences in their
essays. Besides that, using analogy in teaching writing is not only helping in
term of learners cohesion and coherence, but it would also inject the
element of fun in pedagogical aspect.

KEBERKESANAN MODUL CaTu
Modul CATU
(Baca dulu baru Tulis) diilhamkan atas keperluan untuk menggalakkan
murid-murid membaca terlebih dahulu bagi menambah ilmu pengetahuan dan
kosa kata sebelum mula menulis kerana kemahiran menulis merupakan
kemahiran yang paling tinggi dalam ilmu bahasa. Dalam bacaan inilah
seharusnya guru-guru memperkenalkan laras bahasa, kosa kata, ungkapan

'P.O.P BUS’ … SOLVE YEAR FIVE
PUPILS OF SEKOLAH KEBANGSAAN PANTAI PROBLEMS IN LEARNING SIMPLE PRESENT AND
PAST TENSE
In learning English Language, it
is important for the pupils to understand the concept of Present Tense and Past
Tense. It is because these two grammatical items express whether an action
currently going on or had happened. Unfortunately, the weak pupils in my
respective school had difficulties to understand and use these grammatical
items correctly due to misapprehend of the concept of Singular or Plural. The
pupils also cannot identify the Present Tense and Past Tense situation. Besides
that, the pupils have problems to remember the rules that related to these
grammar. P.O.P BUS had successfully solved the problems mentioned above. P.O.P
BUS is a card with two buses design attached together which include all the
information related to grammatical items. A slot on the body of each bus is
used to insert sentence strips. The time frame printed on the body of the buses
assist pupils to indicate habitually performed, Present Tense or Past Tense.
P.O.P BUS boost up pupils’ interests and self-esteem in learning English
Language. This hands-on activity gives clear picture of the concept of Present
Tense and Past Tense as they look, read, learn and play. Data gathered showed
that pupils were able to differentiate and understand singular and plural form of
Simple Present Tense as well as Simple Past Tense.

The aims of this research are to
help pupils master writing sentences using OMG Map and to determine the effects
of basic mastery of writing on pupils’ behaviours. This research included eight
Year 6 pupils from a school in Labuan. Pupils were chosen based on a diagnostic
test and structured observation on their behaviours before they master writing
a variety of sentences. The action started with pre-test whichwas implemented
to see pupils’ mastery level before the action. Then, the first step was
implemented using OMG Map followed by the second step, writing sentences by
constructing their own OMG Map. The third step is constructing simple and
compound sentences using the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th strategy of OMG Map. The
fourth step is using the combination of OMG Map. Post-test was implemented after
the fourth step to see pupils’ mastery level after the action. To obtain
validity and reliability of the data, semi-structured interview was carried out
to identify the types of errors that caused failure in the post-test.
Structured observations were conducted to see changes in pupils’ behaviour.
Data were collected based on triangulation then were analysed and interpreted
in detail. The finding revealed that using OMG Map helped pupils in mastering
writing sentences and it changed the behaviour of those pupils to become
better.
