LEARNING
OBJECTIVES AND SUCCESS CRITERIA & TEACHERS’ MOTIVATION
Designing
high quality learning objectives is one of the most important elements in
planning a good lesson. A successful lesson will be driven by these objectives.
Learning objectives should be shared with students in each lesson. They should
be written on the board and explained
orally. It is essential that learning
objectives are:
- Made visual
- In ‘student-friendly’ language
- Explained fully to the students
- Referred to regularly throughout the lesson
- Reviewed in your plenary
A learning objective is simply a
description of what you want your students to know, understand or be able to do
by the end of a lesson. It tells
students what the focus for learning is going to be.
Success Criteria are the statements
that help students recognize if they have been successful in their learning.
They summarise the main teaching points and they always link directly to the
learning objectives. They essentially spell out the steps required to achieve
the learning objectives, offering explicit guidance on how to be successful. By
referring to the success criteria, students would know if they have achieved
the learning objective.
Motivation
is not completely a new term. Motivation
is defined as “some kind of internal drive which pushes someone to do things in
order to achieve something” (Harmer, 2001:51). Teacher motivation naturally has
to do with teachers’ attitude to work. It is not only about the motivation to teach
but also about the motivation to be a teacher as a lifelong career.

INNOVATING
TEACHING FOR BETTER LEARNING
Learners
of English who lack opportunities to learn and practice the target language may
face difficulties in expressing themselves confidently and effectively. Errors
and mistakes, especially in grammar, can lead to misunderstanding and
miscommunication. Therefore, it is essential for teachers to provide ample
opportunities for students to practice using the correct and appropriate
grammatical structures. This would help develop and increase competency and
mastery of the language. I SPY 5 Stars, a multi-award winning self-developed
learning tool and SuVA Grammar Cards have been used to capture students’
interest and to motivate them to practice in a more meaningful manner. Students
who participated in two experimental studies were required to sit for a
pre-test and post-test to monitor their achievement. The results showed that
students responded positively towards I SPY 5 Stars and SuVA Grammar Cards. The
project improved their grammar learning.

READERS
THEATRE TO ENHANCE READING FLUENCY IN ESL CLASSROOM
Readers Theatre is an oral presentation of drama, prose or
poetry by two or more readers. When Readers Theatre is done in the ESL
classroom, students will do reading activity in a fun way, similar with the way
one might sing in a choir or participate in a play. Besides, it provides every
learner with something that they need: reading fluency, vocabulary development
and ultimately the background knowledge in Second Language comprehension. In Readers
Theatre, the aim is not to memorize lines or parts, but students practice and
deliver the written script. Thus, reading activity is more enjoyable besides it
could develop vocabulary.

TO
WRITE OR NOT TO WRITE: IMPLEMENTATION OF DIALOGUE JOURNAL WRITING IN ESL
CLASSROOMS
Dialogue
journal writing is a fun way to improve learners’ fluency and views on their
writing ability. By implementing dialogue journal in ESL classrooms,
relationship among teacher and students could also be improved as dialogue
journal is a platform for students to express their ideas and opinions. Apart
from that, dialogue journal also provides chances for students to enhance their
vocabulary development and creative and critical thinking. Additionally,
students also showed positive attitude towards writing and viewed dialogue
journal as a great tool in learning writing.

HOW
TO GET STUDENTS’ ATTENTION?: LITTLE TRICKS FROM 15 ENGLISH TEACHERS IN LABUAN
Teachers
often aim for successful and effective teaching by using a variety of teaching
techniques and methods to ensure that students achieve the intended learning
objectives. However, teaching and learning processes can be interrupted by a
number of factors such as students who are noisy, inattentive and playful. Such
disturbances need to be addressed to ensure that students are able to
concentrate on their learning activities. This qualitative study observed and
captured a video of numerous tricks that teachers in Labuan have implemented in
helping their students to pay attention in the classroom. Some of the tricks
which will be shared in the presentation are Name Calling, Non-Verbal Clues,
Body Language, Ask Question, Offer Assistance, Echo Clapping, Call and Response
& Cues and Clues. All of these tricks are simple yet interesting language
learning strategies that have helped students to better focus on their learning
activities._________________________________________________________________________

THE
LIVING PHOTOGRAPH BIG BOOK
There
are 4 poems for students to learn in SPM. This big book on the poem ‘The Living
Photograph’ for Form 4 is to enhance the teaching of the poem especially to the
weaker and average students. This is to encourage them to read and understand
the poem by looking at the pictures which will attract their attention in
class. This big book consists of a few pages whereby the explanation of the
poem is done line by line. It includes the setting, persona, tone & mood,
moral value and lastly the themes. Pictures were drawn by the students
themselves. Based on this poem, 25 questions will be given to the class to see
if they remember what they have learnt from the poem. It was found that their
attention span increased. The wordings were easier to understand. Vocabularies
were simplified so that they could understand and memorize well. Though there
are a few limitations such as time constraints in doing the big book and
students’ involvement, the outcome of it and the students’ interaction in
communicating in the language is very promising. The full findings on the
outcome will be presented in CAIELT 2016.

ZAHARAH BINTI MAT JALI B. Modern English Studies (Wales, Cardiff)
Prior to working in Labuan in June 1999, I completed my degree in Modern
English Studies at the University of Wales, Cardiff. I was appointed as
the Language Officer for JPWPL from January 2000 until December 2014.
My enormous experience in the profession has exhilarated me to
reconnoiter modest and yet applicable techniques in acquiring English.
APPLICABLE TECHNIQUES IN ACQUIRING ENGLISH FOR THE LOW TO AVERAGE SECOND AND THIRD SPEAKERS
Teachers are persistently looking for applicable techniques in teaching
low to average second and third speakers of the English language. Teachers
need to comprehend the most appropriate and suitable techniques for the
learners’ specific objectives, learning styles and contexts to boost
their enjoyment in teaching and learning and most crucially, for the
students to be able to apply the knowledge. Teachers need to be
reinvigorated and be optimistic that English is fun to teach and learn
rather than feeling drained when it comes for them to enter the class of
English for fear of not having any good outcomes. Thus, I shall evoke
some applicable techniques that I am very assured could help both
parties to have delights in the lessons. The use of VLE Frog means a
whole lot of prospects that we could have effortlessly taken from the
internet. Interactive teaching and learning is something that teachers
need to plump for occasionally to knock the attentiveness of the
students. Using coloured papers, wrappers, snack coverings are among
kits that the students do not presume teachers to carry into the
lessons. A simple gesture, a word of encouragement or even being impish,
does create a lot of difference between a stoical class and an animated
one. Hence, I shall share with the audience the applicable techniques
in acquiring English for the low to average second and third speakers.
